"Our arrival in Mexico City was a bit of a blur. As soon as we had our luggage, we caught a taxi to Casa Paulo Hotel. It was nighttime and all we could see was a vague impression of a myriad of lights. The drive seemed to take ages, but finally our taxi pulled up at our hotel."

Mexico City served as the political, administrative and financial centre of a major part of the Spanish colonial empire. After independence from Spain was achieved, the Federal District was created in 1824. It remains the capital city of Mexico and is one of the world's largest and most polluted cities.
